 Phineas Gage                                                                                                                               Trenton Rau

John Fleischman

Non-Fiction/Biography

Phineas Gage was a railroad worker who had an accident in the late 1800s which lead to new discoveries about the unique human brain and how it works. Phineas was a railroad worker who had an explosive accident, and despite the fact he had a hole in his head he acted like nothing happened. Phineas Gage made a “complete recovery” and went on to have many jobs and traveled all around the world. Even surviving having a hole in his head Phineas never quite acted the same, and it also changed the way people thought of the unique human brain.

In the story of Phineas Gage the author’s theme was about luck, if Phineas was lucky or unlucky, and even what lucky means. I think Phineas was lucky because he survived having a rod shot through his head, and got to live another 11 years. I would say that is lucky

This book was good, but some parts were slow and had a little too much information on brain surgery and other parts of the brain. The parts I enjoyed were all the details of his job and the accident and how it happened. I also enjoyed the pictures and the freaky museum that he worked at and all the details about it. I also liked how he described the people and what they thought of the brain.  I would recommend this book to people who like non-fiction and stuff about the brain. I would give this book a 3 out of 5 because I don’t really like non-fiction, but if you do you should really enjoy it.
